Barrow Matheletes
Barrow Matheletes is our
cluster. Ms. Cross is the facilitator.
We used math to accomplish various things in our cluster. ome of us built catapults and then hurled
small objects from them. We measured the distance our objects traveled and
collected data on that. We also did some problem solving to fine tune and
improve our constructions. Some of us designed and built paper airplanes and
test their flight patterns. We examined the different kinds of mathematical
shapes in our planes. One of us designed a board game. We are currently mixing bubble
solution and have been building various tools for blowing bubbles. We blew
bubble domes on a table and measured the diameter of each dome. We have
collected and compared data for the past two weeks on these domes. We analyzed
these measures of central tendency: mean, median, mode, and range. We have
studied the Bernoulli Principle and tried to apply it to controlling the flight
path of our bubbles. We have built several kinds of polyhedra to dip in bubble
solution. We are curious to see how the soap film will respond when we did
these figures in them next time we meet. We have also solved some rather
complex problems we found from the Mathnasium online and have also played with
pentominoes. We are still trying to solve the puzzle that involves making one
large rectangle from all 12 pentiominoes. As you can see, we are curious, busy,
and persistent in solving problems! We plan to display some of the items
we created as well as photographs of our work in action. We also intend to host
a hands-on station where our visitors can try out some of the bubble activities
we have enjoyed. We will be present to talk about the math involved in the
various activities at our station, and to just plain have fun!
School
Rock
Our cluster is School Rock.
Ms. Wyatt and Ms. Spurgeon are our facilitators. In School Rock we made songs and music about
what we are learning. We do this for fun
and to help us learn our content. We
made a group song about Barrow's hallway expectations. It's called "Zero in the Hall!"
Also, individually used Audacity and Screencast-O-Matic to help us record and
make digital recordings of our songs. For our final product we have made a
class book with the lyrics and illustrations of our songs and a CD.
